Description

The changes and upheavals in the book business seem to be coming thick and fast these days. We've had sad losses, we've had bad news, we've had good news. And then there are the technological changes that seem to threaten books as we know them. It's easy to wonder what the publishing industry is coming to, but I think some of these changes may hold more promise than might be expected. First the losses. In early March, May Cutler, the founder of Tundra Books, died at the age of 87 (see News on page 6). As many of you will have seen in the numerous articles and tributes, she was an extraordinary pioneer in the development of children's literature in this country. Although she sold Tundra Books in 1995, she remained a notable figure and her loss seems like a monumental passing. As you will have read in the last issue, we also--very suddenly and surprisingly--lost Dennis Johnson, still an active member of the publishing world and the man who built Red Deer Press for many years. And, although she was not Canadian, it is also significant to note the passing of Margaret McElderry, a powerhouse of children's publishing in the US for many decades and an influence on the lives of several Canadian authors and publishers, including Ian Wallace, Patsy Aldana and Gail Winskill. (For more on Cutler, Johnson and McElderry, see www.bookcentre.ca/news.)
